In the context of BDSM, a collar is a device made of a variety of materials that is attached around the neck of a submissive partner. A worn collar may mean that this partner is already "owned" by someone else, in other words, he was "wounded". Some people even consider the collaring ceremony as an equivalent alternative to the wedding ceremony. The standard collar is a strip of black leather, often fitted with metal D-rings to attach a leash.

Collars can be used in humiliation based role play because they carry an additional sense of control and also give a certain "pet" status to the wearer, especially when using a leash.

The most common collar material is genuine leather, although many people use real dog collars with buckles. They can also be made from rubber, PVC, and metal (usually stainless steel, although some offer collars made from precious non-ferrous metals). Many collars are made from several different materials and come in many different designs. Collars are often supplied with buckles, straps, hooks, padlocks and other fittings.

Collars have different meanings for people in the BDSM community. The person who wears the collar may want to say by this that he or she is a submissive (submissive in BDSM). Wearing a collar can also serve as a signal to others that the submissive is "owned" or in a relationship with the dominant, and that the wearer of the device has officially passed the collaring ceremony. It can also serve as a material symbol of the relationship itself, that is, play the role of a wedding ring or a "label of a slave" if the submissive is someone's "property". A key-locked collar may symbolize the transfer of power from the submissive to the dominant, who will hold the key.

Some submissives do not wear collars all the time. As a fashion accessory, they are becoming more common, but not so much as to go unnoticed in the crowd, especially if their owner is a man. Many choose to wear their collars only when they are alone with their partners or members of the BDSM community.
