Hematolagnia is an interest in sex in which the participants will interact with blood - look at it, smear it over the body, or even drink it. This form of intimacy is called Blood Play and is one of the BDSM practices. Like pygmalionism, hematolagnia is considered paraphilia - a form of intimate communication, where the main interest is an atypical object for sex.

Blood Play may include interactions such as scratching a partner, scarring, simulating a medical examination, or an act of vampirism. Among those who love the sight of blood but can't hurt a partner or don't want to leave marks on their bodies are people who swap liquids for products that look like it: red wine, pomegranate juice, or even cherry syrup.

For a long time, there has been debate about whether sex during menstruation can be considered a kind of Blood Play. Healthline service specialists came to the conclusion that everything depends on the object of interest of the partners. If they enjoy exclusively intimacy, not paying attention to blood, then they can simply be called liberated people who are not a hindrance to physiological processes. If lovers want to devote more time to secretions, then they definitely have hematolagnia.

References to hematolagnia are noticeable in almost every work about vampires: the series True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, the films Interview with the Vampire, Dracula, the musical Lestat. Craving for blood was also attributed to real personalities, for example, the Hungarian Countess Elisabeth Báthory.

Blood has long been considered a sacred fluid. Those who studied alchemy and magic used it in their experiments, and medieval sorcerers even believed that just a drop of blood from an outsider, drunk by an experienced occultist, would help him subdue the mind of the victim.

There were also myths that the blood of animals, tasted by man, gives the qualities of sacrificial animals. Rumor has it that there are still people in Thailand who drink the blood of snakes - it, according to popular beliefs, improves potency.

In a word, blood is considered a mysterious element - this is what attracts. Some of her lovers admire the color of the liquid, which is considered a shade of passion and desire.
