Fire play is a type of heat play that involves applying flames directly to the surface of the skin and using fire very close to it. For this, 70% isopropyl alcohol and a special stick, which is a small torch, are usually used. Other toys to play with fire include burning gloves, burning floggers (flagellation devices), other flammable liquids are 91% isopropyl alcohol, mousse, hand sanitizer, high proof rum, grain alcohol and nitrocellulose. Since there are many varieties of BDSM plays, there is still an ongoing debate about which items, fuels and safety rules are considered the most "correct".

Fire games are generally considered to be a type of edge plays - exciting and dangerous. Unlike other types of games on the edge (plays with violence, blood plays, forced interrogations and kidnappings), plays with fire look softer and kinder. Although they may look dramatic, the sensations resulting from such scenes are not actually painful (nor are hot wax games, other sensual games). Playing with fire also rarely leaves marks on the skin - although some people deliberately burn the skin to leave redness and irritation. For this reason, some people think that plays with fire are technically edge plays. But do not forget that an uncontrolled flame can lead to terrible consequences.

The two most common techniques for playing with fire are tapping and driving a burning stick across the skin. The tapping is done with a burning stick, which may or may not include the transfer of a burning liquid.

Skin driving is done by applying a burning fuel to the skin (usually in straight lines), it burns for a while, and then goes out before the skin begins to burn. Often, fuel is applied to the skin with a non-burning stick, and then set on fire with a burning one (to simplify this procedure, a double-sided stick or two separate sticks are sometimes used).
