Gorean refers to a perverted lifestyle that originated in the novels of science fiction writer John Norman. Those who participate in the Gorean lifestyle, or "Goreans", generally follow a master-slave relationship structure, although slavery need not be Gorean. Gorean identity is built around the Home Stone (home), the Caste System (career and the status it brings) and the Order of Nature (gender role).
Although the Goreans in Norman's novels hail from the planet Horus, many admirers of the writer's work have adopted the Gorean way of life. It shares the key concepts of bondage and bondage with the BDSM model. Despite this, however, most Gorians do not view their lifestyle as a type of BDSM.
Unlike many BDSM practitioners, many people who live the Gorean lifestyle tend to follow their roles at all times, both in and out of the sexual setting, although some Goreans enjoy the lifestyle only on a part-time basis. Gorean slaves willingly submit to their masters without the need for a whip or other BDSM tools. John Norman, the author whose novels inspired the lifestyle, has criticized the physical and psychological harm that BDSM can bring. Because of this, he suggested using symbolic, harmless substitutes such as the sound of clapping to punish instead of hitting.
Gorei tend to adhere to traditional gender roles, with women serving as slaves and men serving as their masters. However, this is not always the case, and a strong woman may take a male slave. However, the Gorean lifestyle has been criticized by some who see it as misogynistic, offensive and manipulative. However, despite these views, the women who participate insist that they do so voluntarily.
